Talisman Energy is a global oil and gas company with interests primarily in North America, the North Sea and Southeast Asia. Southeast Asia has been identified as a core growth area for Talisman where it has embarked on a successful gas aggregation strategy in Papua New Guinea where it now holds interests in twelve blocks. Talisman has a significant exploration programme in progress and is currently considering various development concepts that will allow the company to monetise its PNG gas discoveries and prospects. Talisman Australasia is also looking to augment its non-operated positions in Australia via further deepening opportunities. To this end, the company is establishing an office in Brisbane and is planning to recruit a number of key individuals to work within its growing asset team.
We require a dynamic, seasoned Legal Manager to direct the business and assets of the Talisman group in PNG and Australia. As Legal Manager, you will play a key role as part of the PNG and Australia leadership team providing counsel to the Vice-President, Australia and PNG and other key members of the management team.
The position will be located in Brisbane with some travel to PNG. This role will report directly to the Vice-President, Australia and PNG, located in Brisbane, and functionally report to the Vice-President, Legal, in Calgary, Canada.
Responsibilities:
- Managing the legal aspects of the twelve blocks owned by the Talisman group in PNG, including oversight of land retention obligations and other legal and regulatory matters involving the Department of Petroleum and Energy.
- Drafting, negotiating and attending to the legal aspects of all upstream and downstream agreements such as purchase, farm-in, drilling, procurement, gas processing, joint operating, LNG, and other key oil and gas contracts in PNG and Australia.
- Ensuring compliance with the corporate law requirements of the Talisman subsidiaries active in PNG and Australia.
- Monitoring and ensuring compliance with the regulatory requirements of PNG and Australia as it relates to the development of the assets including overseeing the corporate and securities regulatory requirements in all relevant jurisdictions.
- Attending to the legal aspects of office lease and employment matters in PNG and Australia.
- Providing legal counsel and opinions on various issues as required by the functional business units.
- Managing all legal proceedings and relations with external counsel.
- Providing regular updates to Calgary functional leadership of all material developments and potential claims in respect of Talisman's PNG and Australia operations.
Qualifications:
- Must have an LL.B. or equivalent from Australia or other commonwealth jurisdiction.
- Must be eligible to practice law as an Australian legal practitioner under the Legal Profession Act 2007 (Qld) or under corresponding legislation in another Australian jurisdiction.
- Must have a minimum of 8 years post-admission experience in oil and gas law with strong corporate and commercial law knowledge.
- Preference will be given to those with previous PNG and/or Australian oil and gas experience.
- Knowledge of LNG contracts and issues would be an asset.
- Experience with corporate governance within a multi-subsidiary group would be helpful.
Candidate Profile:
- Superior legal skills applied with a practical, results-oriented approach and sound business acumen.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to handle complex and sensitive government, regulatory and co-participant relations.
- Some travel to PNG will be required.

- Only candidates who are legally permitted to work in Australia will be considered.
- Relocation will be provided for the successful candidates if required.
