VIDEO SPECIAL: how do law firms score interviews?

You’ve made it through the CV process and have lined up an interview for a role at your dream firm. To make sure you don’t fall at the final hurdle, click here to watch law firm specialists talking about the interview process.

A job interview is more than just rehashing everything in your CV; it’s about allowing the firm to get to know you better. “The interview is about getting a sense of [the candidate] as a person. [What we] are really looking to see is what it would be like to spend every day with [the person] and what it would be like to put the person in front of a client,” Truman Hoyle managing partner Shane Barber explains. “[We also look at] what it would be like to ultimately have the candidate as a business partner and owner.”

The initial interview is also used to determine if the jobseeker has a balance of the qualities and skills the firm is looking for. “We are looking for someone who can present their strengths and capabilities, but is also confident in talking about the areas they are still developing and growing in,” Middletons’ human resources director Tracey McDonald says. “Our candidates need to be well-researched on what opportunities are available in the business... [and they need] to come into the interview and have a discussion around that.”

To succeed at the interview jobseekers should engage in discussion of their experience and skills in an interesting and fluent manner. “It should also be assumed that their CVs have been read and understood,” Corrs Chambers Westgarth litigation partner Andrew Korbel says.
